City Club Apartments Union Central is a luxury rental development project located at 1 West Fourth St., Downtown Cincinnati. The 31-story, 495-foot tall building is a conversion from an office tower to a residential complex. Developed by City Club Apartments LLC, the project aims to restore the historic Union Central Tower to its former glory while providing modern amenities and living spaces.
Originally completed in 1913, Union Central Tower was once the fifth-tallest building in the world. Designed by local architects Garber & Woodward and Cass Gilbert, the tower served as an office space for Union Central Life Insurance Co. Over the years, it has housed various businesses, including PNC Bank and the U.S. Postal Service and Customs House.
City Club Apartments Union Central is the second phase of the overall development project, following the success of City Club Apartments CBD Cincinnati, located next door. The $90 million luxury apartment complex will feature 281 units, an entertainment venue, co-working spaces, a dog run, and an outdoor infinity pool with a view of Northern Kentucky. The building will be connected to the Annex building by pedestrian bridges.
The architecture of City Club Union Central is a blend of neoclassical and eclectic styles. The exterior is characterized by neoclassical features, including a cream-colored stone facade with stacked terracotta blocks and a marble base. The pyramid-shaped top, designed in a Hellenic style, adds a unique touch to the building’s appearance. Inside, original architectural details from the building’s construction in 1913 are highlighted, enhancing the modern luxury feel.
City Club Apartments Union Central is not only focused on aesthetics but also on sustainable and healthy living. The building aims to be Fitwel-certified, measuring how the design and materials impact occupants’ well-being. It will also be certified with the National Green Building Standard for historic structures.
While the building is currently under construction and not accessible to the public, once complete, the street-level commercial spaces will be open to all, including a restaurant, salon, and med spa. Additionally, City Club’s sister site next door features amenities such as The View at Shires’ Garden Bar and Restaurant, with future plans for a pet store, dry cleaner, daycare, and market.
Pre-leasing is now open, with some units expected to be available for residents starting in November. Construction, including facade rehabilitation, is set to be completed by spring 2024.
Locals are excited about the transformation City Club Apartments Union Central will bring to Downtown Cincinnati. The addition of more residential units is anticipated to drive economic growth and attract new retail and restaurant options to the area.
