Renovated Riverside House Features New Spatial Dimension and Intimate Connection with the Outdoors

The Loïc et Olivia House, designed by Atelier H Architecture, underwent a transformative renovation following the devastating floods in Belgium in July 2021. The clients saw this as an opportunity to reimagine their home and create a stronger connection with the surrounding landscape. The existing ground floor, previously a passageway, was reorganized to integrate better with the outdoors.

To achieve this, the architects used cast-in-place concrete, a material that contrasts with the existing building and blends seamlessly with glazed bricks. The use of glazed bricks introduces a shiny and smooth element that reflects light, creating a visually striking contrast with the rough texture of concrete. A concrete canopy extends over the glazed ensemble, accentuating the spaciousness of the interior, which takes advantage of the generous plot width.

Rain chains were incorporated into the design to establish an intimate connection with the rain, elegantly channeling water and reflecting the changing seasons. The exterior fittings were carefully designed to interact harmoniously with the new interior spaces.

Inside the house, a converted lounge now serves as a boudoir, featuring an air-conditioned wine cellar where residents can enjoy their favorite wines. This room stands out with its dark-colored paintwork, emphasizing the wooden floor and the wine cellar itself.

The kitchen area balances the raw aesthetic of the concrete columns and granito floor with brass and walnut elements, creating a playful and inviting atmosphere.
