Sitatunga Private Island is a unique and sustainable luxury retreat located in the remote Okavango Delta region of Botswana. Built on a raised railway sleeper deck, the camp offers a “slow safari” experience, combining luxury with eco-friendly design.
The camp consists of two spacious guest suites and a two-bedroom suite, accommodating a maximum of four adults or a family of two adults and up to three children. Constructed mostly from recycled materials, the camp breathes new life into old treasures while minimizing its environmental impact.
Each suite features an indoor lounge, beautifully appointed bathrooms with baths and separate showers, a private deck with outdoor seating and lounging areas, and a private pool with panoramic views of the surrounding lagoon. The entire camp can host up to eight guests, who can enjoy the two suites and the two-bedroom suite.
One of the highlights of Sitatunga Private Island is its proximity to sitatunga, a rare aquatic antelope. Guests can spot these fascinating creatures from the camp or while exploring the area on a boat. The camp is also rich in birdlife and offers opportunities to view elephants, crocodiles, and hippos.
The interior design of Sitatunga Private Island reflects the history and culture of the Okavango Delta. Giant bamboo fisherman basket structures pay homage to the Bayei people who once occupied the area. The rooms are designed as tents suspended within these baskets, with interiors featuring a color range inspired by the Okavango’s natural palette.
Dereck and Beverly Joubert, the owners of Sitatunga Private Island, personally sourced all the materials used in the camp, creating a harmonious blend with the natural landscape. The camp has a rustic charm, with thatched roofs and walls, salvaged woodwork, and spacious interiors set high in the ebony trees.
Guests at Sitatunga Private Island can enjoy a variety of “slow safari” activities, including boating safaris, mekoro rides, walking safaris, and game drives. For a special treat, guests can take a scenic private helicopter tour of the Okavango Delta. The camp also offers yoga mats, exercise equipment, in-room massages, a wine cellar, and a boutique.
Sitatunga Private Island is the perfect retreat for those looking to unwind, connect with nature, and create lasting memories. With its sustainable design, outstanding hospitality, and breathtaking surroundings, it offers a truly unique experience in the heart of Botswana’s wilderness.
