A Blossoming Sculpture: A Harmonious Blend of Nature and Architecture in Chengdu

In the heart of Chengdu’s Luxezone Plaza stands an enchanting public installation known as “A Petal in the Urban Oasis.” Crafted by the ingenious minds at Epiphany Architects, this wooden masterpiece seamlessly merges with the surrounding urban greenery, casting mesmerizing light and shadow patterns. Rather than relying on quotes, this article aims to provide a descriptive narrative of the installation’s key features.

The design of “A Petal in the Urban Oasis” embraces its environment, dynamically adapting its shape to best suit the surroundings. It warmly embraces residents and visitors alike, inviting them to experience its embrace. At its core lies a circular void, creating a harmonious social space with an even height. Meanwhile, the undulating body of the installation showcases varying heights, offering a lively and dynamic appeal. This provides ample opportunities for interaction, encouraging activities such as playing, sitting, leaning, gathering, and resting. Children, in particular, are captivated by the installation, infusing it with their curious energy.

Supporting this remarkable installation are six mirror bases, cleverly designed to align with the points where the petal seemingly “drops.” By integrating the bases visually, they become one with the petals, amplifying its sense of weightlessness and buoyancy. Additionally, the installation is reinforced by curved steel trusses discreetly concealed between the wooden elements and stainless steel lightboxes. With a snap-fit method securing the trusses to the lightbox, stability and aesthetic unity are effortlessly achieved. The petal itself is composed of 300 wooden pieces of varying lengths and stainless steel lightboxes, which accentuate its captivating contours. Each lightbox uniquely connects to the trusses, resulting in an astonishing 600 additional forms.

Throughout the day, as sunlight filters through the foliage, the undulating wooden sculpture creates a mesmerizing dance of light and shadows. Its organic, wave-like surface resembles the delicate movement of a petal blowing gently in the wind. The installation acts as an open invitation for visitors to explore its structure, luring them to climb to great heights for an extraordinary perspective.

Epiphany Architects’ meticulous integration of technology and art is evident in the production process. The coordination of node design, data output, CNC machine input and output, and overall assembly showcases their dedication to seamless integration. The result is a harmonious fusion of nature and architecture, epitomizing the artistic brilliance of Chengdu.
